Open Lab @ 911 Media Arts Center
Every third Sunday of the month from 7-10 PM
Open Lab is a monthly creative jam session that opens the doors to 911
Media Art's equipment cage and theater. It is also an informal
environment for new media artists to talk about and share new work,
equipment and techniques.
The concept of Open Lab was inspired by other "Open Lab" like activities
that occur in cities through out the world, including Open Lab in London
and Open Lab at EyeBeam in New York City (no relation between them
formally though). Seattle is a very advanced city technologically and is
full of creative people doing very creative things with new technologies.
There are several forums where these ideas and works are presented, like
Dorkbot Seattle, Upgrade! Seattle and the recent VJ Night at 911 Media
Arts Center. These events are mostly oriented toward presenting work in a
formal lecture-like setting.
Open Lab at 911 Media is more oriented toward informal discussion and
experimentation. It is a jam session where musicians and real-time video
artists can play together without the pressure of an audience, and are
free to experiment, explore, and to even make mistakes while pushing their
medium to it's limit with a group of like-minded people. It is left
purposefully unstructured, there are no themes or agendas other than
getting together and sharing ideas and playing with new media in mind.
The Lab is also a perfect place for those not familiar with 911 Media Arts
Center to come and ask questions and to learn what 911 Media has to offer;
like equipment and facilities, it's programs and workshops. Those with
questions about how to accomplish certain things or simply a thirst to
learn more about new media are also more than welcome.
The 911 Media equipment cage is also available during Open Lab, whatever
equipment is not rented at the time is available for use. This equipment
includes cameras, tripods, microphones, a video mixer, some old G3 iMacs
and a bunch of cables and adapters. The theater at 911 Media is where the
jamming occurs, it has a permanently installed video projector and sound
system, including an audio mixing board.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own rigs for gigs as well. The
more equipment the merrier!
About Joseph Gray
Joseph Gray started Open Lab a couple of years ago. He is a new media
artist and also makes those annoying banner ads on the internet for some
big companies. Joseph earned a BFA from Cornish College of the Arts in
1999, focusing in Video and Sculpture. He continues to find ways to
combine those two things and also performs real-time animation at various
venues around the Northwest, primarily with the experimental jazz
collective Monktail Creative Music Concern.
