Light_Sound_Glass
The basic concept behind Light Sound Glass was to make an object that was portable, took advantage of the materials at hand, and could be fed a wide variety of sounds and images, depending on the situation. The object was designed to also take advantage of the reflective properties of the materials in conjunction with sound and light. Prograta plans to tote the thing around to other venues in the future, and hopefully do a larger scale installation based on a similar concept. It was shown originally at the November 2004 revue of 12 Minutes Max at On The Boards (OTB) in Seattle.
Light Sound Glass is built of almost all repurposed materials, except for the video projector within it, some fasteners and paint. The wood is from a theatre stage set, which was appropriate for the OTB venue. The glass was originally intended for an upscale office building interior, but contained minute defects and was given away. Joe found the parking garage mirror behind the Fred Meyer on Capitol Hill when it was being remodeled. Golem, the laptop, was got when Gabe won a bet over whether it could be fixed or not. It's an "old school" Apple G3 laptop, with no screen and a broken track pad. Running on the laptop is the beta software Keyworx, an easy to use interface for generating audio and video in realtime for performance and installation. Keyworx is being developed by WAAG Centre for Old and New Media in Rotterdam, and is distributed for free on their web site. The object itself is around 70 inches tall and 35" across at the base. Prograta is a multimedia performance and installation duo consisting of video artist Joseph Gray and electronic musician Gabriel Henderson. The name is a combination of "Programatic" and "Non-Grata", Non-Grata being the large ensemble version of the Monktail Creative Music Concern (MCMC). The name was devised after a performance in July of 2004 at Lo-Fi, Seattle, where proto-Prograta provided visuals for Floss, another band within MCMC.
