Documentation: Video Studio Sketches Install Process Source Media and Software Finished Installation Studio Sketches The original concept behind Light_Sound_Paper, as a sculptural process, began as a need to find an inexpensive way to create large three dimensional surfaces to project video upon. The particular form of this sculpture is based off of simple sketching techniques, a sort of automatic drawing, that is fed by observing a wide variety of ornament, biological and other natural forms, and various artistic styles throughout the ages. These images are not referenced directly, but rather come to surface during the actual process, real-time gestalt, as-it-were. This process of sketching is simply scaled up for the sculptural process. Instead of using a marking tool a razor is used to render the forms, using movements of the entire arm and body, instead of just the hand and forearm, due to the larger scale. The process is influenced by mid-20th century artists, such as a Hans/Jean Arp and Wassily Kandinsky, who explored the automatic drawing techniques dug up by the Surrealists, but applied them to the pure-form philosophies of modern non-objective art. |
