Cube Etude Beta
Synopsis:
A simple cube made from tag board and taped together. A prototype for an upcoming exhibition demonstrating that a physical sculpture can be projected upon with the image of a 3D model perfectly mimicing the actual shape. Images texture mapped to the virtual cube can line up directly with the real, physical, cube in such a way that the images are corrected for the distortion of perspective. In other words, the virtual texture-mapped cube becomes a real texture mapped cube. In the video to the right a demonstration of this technique is shown, albeit in a primitive way. The suggestion here is that a more complex 3D object could be created in a modeling program, physically re-created and then projected upon with a texture-mapped image of it's virtual counter-part. The imagery on the cube is simply a live video stream from the computers built in camera mapped to each surface of the cube. Additional virtual lighting is controlled by LFOs. Materials: One video projector; one iMac running Quartz Composer; tagboard, framers tape The final sculpture will use two video projectors and two computers for complete coverage of the surface.
